Medical technology is used by healthcare professionals, therapists and patients every day, enabling patients to live healthier and more productive lives.
The local medtech industry employs more than 10 000 people and comprises a diverse group of products – more than 500 000 different technologies – vital to health service provision. These range from sticking plasters and wheelchairs through to pacemakers and replacement joints.
South Africa is a regional leader in medtech, and one of the largest markets in the Middle East & Africa (MEA) region. Its market is supported by a large population and Africa’s most industrialised economy. With limited albeit growing domestic medical device production, currently, there is a significant dependence on imports.
