Medical technology is used by healthcare professionals, therapists and patients every day, enabling patients to live healthier and more productive lives.
The local medtech industry employs more than 4 000 people and comprises a diverse group of products – more than 500 000 different technologies – vital to health service provision. These range from sticking plasters and wheelchairs through to pacemakers and replacement joints.
South Africa is a regional leader in medtech, and one of the largest markets in the Middle East & Africa (MEA) region. Its market is supported by a large population and Africa’s most industrialised economy. With limited albeit growing domestic medical device production, currently, there is a significant dependence on imports.
