The Medical Device and Diagnostic Innovation Cluster (MeDDIC) has made good on the promise made at its recent stakeholder event to invite applications for seed-funding for localised production of medical devices. Through this grant, MeDDIC specifically aims to increase local content of medical devices that are already in use in the public health sector and are fully or substantially imported. New medical devices will only be considered if they directly replace a product used in the public sector that is currently imported or largely imported.

Preferences will be given to proposals that:

  • Bring together all the required expertise and capacity to manufacture the specified medical device or a key component.
  • Address a technology or manufacturing capability that is unavailable in South Africa or very limited.
  • Aim to deliver a registered product, ready for manufacture, within 12 – 18 months.
  • Will result in products or components that are rapidly scalable and competitively priced.

MeDDIC resides within the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)and has as its major backers the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).

The deadline for submissions is 17h00 on 14 May. Click on links for the RFA document, proposal template and budget template.
