Why this data matters
Data with Integrity is SAMED’s secure data management platform, designed to collect, consolidate, and report key information on South Africa’s medical technology (MedTech) industry. Its purpose is to provide credible data for engagement with stakeholders and to support evidence-based policy and decision-making across the sector.
The insights generated through the platform enable SAMED to strengthen advocacy efforts, support industry negotiations, inform legislative and policy submissions, and foster strategic partnerships. All data is managed under strict confidentiality protocols to protect sensitive and commercially relevant information.
Aggregated, anonymised industry data may be shared with relevant public and private stakeholders, including government departments, regulatory authorities, healthcare organisations, industry bodies, research institutions, and international organisations, where permitted by law and in support of the MedTech sector’s development.
Data with Integrity provides insights into:
- Public sector debt trends
- B-BBEE status across the MedTech sector
- Women empowerment metrics
- The composition of local manufacturers, multinationals, distributors, and wholesalers
- The size and scope of the South African MedTech market
- Import, export, local manufacturing, and innovation trends within the sector
Participating companies will have access to high-level dashboards and progress reports, providing valuable industry benchmarks and insights.
Confidentiality and Data Security
Confidentiality and data security are central to the Data with Integrity programme. SAMED has implemented robust measures to ensure that individual company information remains secure, confidential, and inaccessible to unauthorised parties, including SAMED staff, Board members, and other participants.
The platform is administered by Navig8, an independent service provider bound by strict confidentiality, data protection, and POPIA compliance obligations.
Key safeguards include:
- Data is depersonalised and aggregated, preventing the identification of individual companies in reports.
- Commercially sensitive information and data subject to confidentiality obligations will not be disclosed to third parties.
- SAMED personnel have access only to aggregated industry data and reports.
- Participating companies may access only their own data and approved aggregate industry information.
- Access is restricted to authorised users through secure authentication and role-based permissions.
- Data is securely hosted and protected through encryption, audit logging, regular backups, and disaster recovery measures.
- Data is retained, processed, and disposed of in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- The programme operates in compliance with the Competition Act, relevant Competition Commission guidance, POPIA, and other applicable data protection laws.
Individual company data will not be shared with third parties except where permitted by law and consistent with the objectives of the programme. Any external reporting will be based solely on aggregated and anonymised information.
Under its agreement with SAMED, Navig8 is contractually required to maintain appropriate technical and organisational security measures, including secure hosting, encryption of data in transit and at rest, role-based access controls, audit trails, regular backups, and business continuity and disaster recovery procedures. Navig8 may not use or disclose member data except as authorised under the agreement and for the purposes of the Data with Integrity programme.
