SAMED Annual Conference 2024
Empowering Medtech’s Tomorrow, Together
Catch our 2023 conference highlights here
The South African Medical Technology Industry Association (SAMED)’s annual conference is our flagship gathering with members and industry insiders, and SAMED’s best-attended event. The conference provides insights and information on the ever-evolving healthcare and medical technology sector. Our annual conference creates dynamic conversation opportunities between medical technology suppliers and key industry stakeholders including the private and public healthcare sectors, policy makers, trade enablers and patients.
This year’s conference theme is devoted to empowering the SAMED collective – the shared core which encompasses both our members and stakeholders – to progress towards a collaborative, inclusive and constructive future.
With your participation, we are seeking successes that go beyond what is currently on our radar.
We can influence the future with the actions we take today by boldly striving to embed diversity, equity and inclusion, raise the profile of medtech, enable patient-centric healthcare and resolve concerns of members, patients and health sector role players.
Through the sharing of knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm, we can strengthen sustainability.
And by purposefully moving the needle together with stakeholders and partners, we can co-create a solution mindset and realise greater impact for patients, member companies and the health system.

A whistleblower is a person who discloses information regarding actions that are unlawful, illicit or against public interest, that he/she has witnessed, especially in the context of his/her work. By disclosing this information, whistleblowers take the risk of facing reprisal from those who are alleged of wrongdoing. We look at what is needed to defend whistleblowers, and advocate on their behalf where their disclosures speak to the public interest of South African medtech, healthcare and patients.

12:20 In an age of cybercrime, how do we keep patients and their data secure
Healthcare is increasingly becoming a lucrative target for cyber-criminals. A Journal of the American Medical Association report found that between 2016 and 2021, the number of ransomware attacks on healthcare delivery organizations more than doubled, exposing the personal health information of nearly 42 million patients. As the world moves toward legislated cyber security standards, we look at the important role of the medtech industry to help reduce cyber-attacks on hospital systems and together with healthcare institutions build a cyber-resilient South African healthcare system.

12:05 Give the planet a seat at the table | Thembekile Mrototo
Tackling climate change is an overwhelming task for many organisations. Every government, business, person and initiative can contribute. The only way to instil environmental responsibility into all projects is to ‘give the planet a seat at the table’. We explore green medtech and what it will take to move to zero climate impact in a sector that is synonymous with single-use disposable technologies. We see what companies can do to reduce carbon emissions, make environmentally conscious product decisions, and create a sustainable medtech sector.

14:55 Empowering Equitable Healthcare | Thembekile Mrototo
Addressing patient health equity can feel like an overwhelming, intractable problem. It takes commitment and leadership to move the needle and address diversity in the research and development of innovative medical treatments and technologies.
We look at how to bring diversity (gender, age and ethnicity) to more than just clinical trials but expanding it to bringing surgeries closer to underserved populations and opening hospitals and surgery centres near where patients live.
How do we expand programs to ensure that whoever performs the surgery is able to engender trust and comfort? Having an impact requires clear metrics to understand what is working and create conscious change.
We need steps along the journey that show progress as the underlying causes are obviated. How equal are diagnosis rates? How clear is the clinical mandate to treat all populations or the funding pathways available? How difficult is the journey from home to care for disadvantaged populations? How diverse are the healthcare professionals providing care? After identifying the root causes, we need a set of metrics that we can relentlessly drive to show they are being addressed. What is medtech’s role in recognizing and addressing disparities in equitable care? And what about those extremely vulnerable and marginalised patients with rare diseases? How can UHC support or hinder them from getting the care they need at an affordable cost?

13:55 Where ethics and new technologies intersect: assessing ethical considerations for the medtech industry | Thembekile Mrototo
Artificial Intelligence, robotic interventions, digital therapeutics, genomics, and other innovations are changing the medical device landscape. It may be time to pause and consider the ethical implications of rapidly evolving new technologies fuelled by the 4th industrial revolution. What are the ethical considerations for medtech emergent technologies? Should we sacrifice innovation in favour of ethics or is there enough space for both to work synergistically? How do we ensure that we keep the patient at the heart of innovation and avoid fuelling health divides just for the sake of innovation?
